After many months of driving around for parts, using our club facebook page for requests, pleading with fellow enthusiasts I am finally near the point of completion. I would like to get it finished for the winter then commission it and get it through an MOT next spring.
It doesn’t have to have an MOT but getting a competent garage to go through it and sort any issues when you have restored a car is a sensible approach and, to be honest, peanuts compared to the cost of parts and the car itself!!
Some bits have been straightforward and some have been a fight. One of the last tasks is the exhaust system and as they are not an ‘off the shelf’ item I went to a relatively local custom exhaust maker. I took the GT and left it with them for the day and explained that the floor pan is the same. They did a great job and it is all fitted as a 5 section system.
The very last job will be to fit the replica steering wheel. It is a thing of beauty which despite being a replica was still £400—original ones are also extremely rare now.
The engine was checked and fitted up by a good friend Dick Rowland in York and runs sweet with rebuilt carbs (there is one for each of the 4 cylinders) and I purchased a new built radiator. It is not as per original but does the job and looks the part. Roll on next summer!!
