Drax Power Station news

We had our regular parish liason meeting with the power station and I thought it an idea to update you on their situation and some basic facts.

Firstly they have received further support from the current government, albeit at a lower level, until March 2031. Then there is the old Fluid Gas Desulpharisation plant (built to remove sulphur when they burnt coal) which has now been completely decommisioned and they are now waiting for Government approval for the Carbon Capture scheme (BECCS) before actually demolishing it.

Part of the reasoning behind this is the simple fact that the construction of the new all singing all dancing Nuclear Power Staion at Hinckley Point is delayed and a further simple fact is we actually need electricty.

Then some interesting little facts.

  1. Actually one of the biggest CO2 producers is cement works–you build more houses, you create more of the stuff!
  2. Microsoft and others are looking for really secure electricity supply for their data centres so one may be on its way locally on top of the one at Eggborough—cooling for them is also important, so the river will be useful.
  3. Nationally the power station provides jobs for around 6,500 people
  4. It has cost the company a staggering £4.7m to remove all the waste from the site at the golf course and there is little likelihood of them getting any of this loss back.
  5. They had an inspection from the Government body that regulates and checks up on them and what they are doing (no breaches by the way). An equally staggering team of 27 people rolled up—that must be some sort of record!!!

They have produced a film as it’s their 50th year since starting and they do regular engagements with schools and colleges in a 10 mile radius.

Finally—Easter event at the Skylark centre on April 16th and 17th and they have regular Charity applications for each quarter and the dealine for this year are June 2nd and Sept 1st–visit their website!!
