20’s Plenty

In North Yorkshire there is no appetite in the Executive at the council to introduce a 20mph zone for all areas where people live. Debate was lost twice at Full Council recently following members of the public speaking to the Full Council.

And so it will continue to be raised wherever possible until someone has listened and acted upon it. Things like:

‘It will have a massive impact on business’

‘It will cost a fortune to put up the new signs’

Have all been used as excuses

Well I have no idea where they get those ‘facts’ from but lets just take a look at it.

I recently went to Wales, which has introduced 20mph where people live. I did 150 miles to get there and it added a whole half a minute on to my journey because 99% of it was on normal roads. Then, with regards signs, we had a change of speed limit in Carlton from 40mph to 30mph. All it needed was a few stickers on the original signs!!!

Here’s another fact for you. The government introduced 30mph for streets in towns and cities in 1935 due to safety concerns around the amount of traffic and pedestrians!! Really?!! I believe we have a bit more traffic now some 90 years later—don’t you!?
