I was begining to think you couldn’t make it up. However this is what we have come to expect now from our Government elected to govern us.
Our MP Keir Mather , as a junior whip for the Labour Party, voted against holding an inquiry into grooming gangs and played a role in enforcing the party line on this issue. I believe this decision demonstrates extremely poor judgment and reflects a self-serving approach rather than one rooted in accountability and public interest.
When Ruben Duffy the Chair of Reform UK Association in Selby raised this matter online—drawing attention to Mr. Mather’s voting record and official role within the Labour Party—he was accused by Mayor Jack Proud of engaging in “gutter politics.” This accusation is both unjustified and inappropriate. The facts presented are verifiable in the public domain and reflect widespread public concern. The majority of people in Selby, and indeed across the country, consider it outrageous that such serious crimes could be overlooked or minimized.
It should come as no surprise that the government has now been compelled to launch a long-overdue inquiry following the audit conducted by Baroness Louise Casey. However, one must reasonably ask: had Reform UK not been leading Labour so significantly in the polls, would such an inquiry have even been considered?
I am therefore calling on Keir Mather MP to explain to the public why he felt it was appropriate to vote against an inquiry into such a serious issue. Furthermore, I ask that he acknowledge the likelihood that, without the growing electoral threat posed by Reform UK, the Labour Party may not have responded to public pressure at all.
The people of Selby deserve transparency, accountability, and leadership that reflects their values—not silence and party loyalty in the face of difficult truths.
Whilst he is a member of the Labour Party he was put there by the residents of Selby and Kippax to also serve the residents.
