On Friday, when Parliament was not running, the government announced that they were looking to house asylum seekers in 3 former military housing estates. One is at Linton on Ouse a small village of 800 homes which could potentially now have around 1,000 homes next to it filled with migrants free to roam whilst their application is processed.
They have gone through several ‘safe’ countries to get here and we know why they are here. Free money, proper accommodation, charities to look after them and a system designed to look after them in preference to people born here.
It is understood that houses have to be used but the application 4 years ago failed and one wonders why the council/government didn’t then look at passing these houses over for local social housing needs. In Selby area alone there are approximately 1,000 on a waiting list for a council house so it must be a lot higher than that for the whole of North Yorkshire.
The policy should be that they are simply sent back to the last safe country they were in and we should not be offering help. Those that say it doesn’t cost much are probably not in need of a council home, not in need of a bed for a night, not in need of any care or support with issues so don’t know that they would suddenly be at the bottom of a pile with asylum seekers being preferentially treated.
It needs sorting and currently no one is dealing with it. What has come over in boats in the past month is more than there is accommodation at Linton on Ouse
